Tedeschi Trucks Band delivered the final night of their seven-show residency at The Beacon Theatre in New York City on Saturday. Susan Tedeschi led the band through a debut of cover of Harry Styles’ “Sign Of The Times” toward the end of the evening.
TTB got their final Beacon outing underway with “Shame” off their 2019 record, Signs. The band then offered a pair of tracks, “D’Gary” and “Where Are My Friends,” from their latest and last release, I Am the Moon IV: Farewell, in their four-part I Am The Moon 2022 studio project.
The original “Somehow” then proceeded a cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Stand Back.” I Am The Moon: III. The Fall’s “Yes We Will” followed ahead of I Am the Moon: I. Crescent’s “Circles ‘Round The Sun” before Derek Trucks led the group through a 22-minute rendition of his instrumental epic, “Pasaquan,” which boasted smoking slide work from the guitarist and a spirited organ solo from Gabe Dixon. Susan then returned to lead the group through a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River.”
TTB circled around to I Am the Moon IV: Farewell to launch the second set with “I Can Feel You Smiling” followed by the title track from their 2019 EP, High & Mighty. Another title track, “I Am The Moon,” came next ahead of a 10-minute rendering of Blind Faith’s “Had To Cry Today.” The band then stretched the Revelator favorite “Midnight In Harlem” for nearly 12 minutes. “Midnight In Harlem” gave way to “I Walk On Guilded Splinters,” on which TTB welcomed Ricky Gordon on washboard as well as Jeff Tain Watts, who took over Isaac Eady’s drum kit. The song got going with a jazzy segment led by saxophonist Kebbi Williams and Watts before vocalist Mike Mattison helmed the Dr. John tune.
Next, John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” led into the Harry Styles cover, “Sign Of The Times.” The song arrived in April 2017 and marked Styles’ debut solo single. Susan went sans guitar on the ballad and delivered an incredible vocal performance for the penultimate song of the second frame. Bobby Bland’s “I Pity The Fool” wrapped the set. The band kept up the covers with a two-song encore consisting of James Taylor’s “Fire & Rain” before concluding the evening and the Beacon run with the Wayne Carson-penned Box Tops tune, “The Letter.”
