Tedeschi Trucks Band delivered night two of their seven-show residency at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Friday. Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks led their band through a complete performance of I Am The Moon: IV. Farewell to kick off the concert..
I Am The Moon: IV. Farewell arrived on August 26 and is the final installment in Tedeschi Trucks Band’s ambitious I Am The Moon project. TTB launched their Beacon residency with a complete performance of I Am The Moon: III. The Fall on Thursday. Friday got going with I Am The Moon: IV. Farewell‘s “Last Night In The Rain” and “Soul Sweet Song,” the latter a tribute to late TTB member Kofi Burbridge.
While the band has been performing those tunes for the past month or so, the next two songs, “D’Gary” and “Where Are My Friends?,” were debuts according to SetlistFM stats. Susan sang the former while vocalist Mike Mattison led the group through the latter on acoustic guitar. The band then performed “I Can Feel You Smiling,” for the first time in public. Derek and Susan debuted the song during one of their Fireside livestreams in 2021. TTB then unveiled IV’s final number, “Another Day.” TTB rounded out the first set with Blind Joe Reynolds’ “Outside Woman Blues,” “Until You Remember” and a massive “Idle Wind” clocking in at 17-minutes and featuring some characteristic Trucks wizardry.
TTB began the second set with The Allman Brothers Band’s “Stand Back,” with keyboardist Gabe Dixon and Susan trading vocal duties, ahead of “I Want More” and Bessie Smith’s “Gin House Blues.” Susan Tedeschi’s solo cut “Just Won’t Burn” and the funky “Misunderstood” came next. “Shame” then prefaced set closer, the band’s cover of Billy Taylor’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free.” TTB returned to encore with a tune from the Derek Trucks Band catalog, “Get What You Deserve,” which saw Susan kicking things off with some rocking riffage and was soon joined by Derek to swap fiery licks before Mattison led the band through the song to wrap night two at the Beacon.
