Beyoncé racked up nine total nominations, the most of any artist. Eight of her nominations come from her 2022 dance album, RENAISSANCE, while the ninth is for “Be Alive”, the song she contributed to the film King Richard. The nine 2023 Grammy nods for Beyoncé put her at 88 nominations for her career. She is now tied with rapper Jay-Z, her husband, for the title of most career Grammy nominations.

Next on the total nominations ranking is rapper Kendrick Lamar with eight. His nominations are split between his most recent double LP, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, and his pre-album single/video, “The Heart Part 5“. While Mr. Morale got nods for Album of the Year and Best Rap Album, Lamar opted to put “The Heart Part 5” up for contention in the Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Music Video categories—a telling choice for an album that was heavy on thematic content and light on radio-friendly singles.

Other notable artists with multiple nominations for the 2023 Grammy Awards include Adele (7), Brandi Carlile (7), Harry Styles (6), Mary J, Blige (6), Future (6), and DJ Khaled (6).

The “big four” categories feature a relatively eclectic mix of 2023 nominees. In the Record of the Year contest, which honors single tracks, Lamar (“The Heart Part 5”) and Beyoncé (“BREAK MY SOUL”) will contend against ABBA (“Don’t Shut Me Down”), Adele (“Easy On Me”), Mary J. Blige (“Good Morning Gorgeous”), Brandi Carlile featuring Lucius (“You and Me On the Rock”), Doja Cat (“Woman”), Steve Lacy (“Bad Habit”), Lizzo (“About Damn Time”), and Harry Styles (“As It Was”).

For Song of the Year, the songwriters of hits performed by Gayle (“abcdefu”), Lizzo (“About Damn Time”), Taylor Swift (“All Too Well” 10 Minute Version), Harry Styles (“As It Was”), Steve Lacy (“Bad Habit”), Beyoncé  (“BREAK MY SOUL”), Adele (“Easy On Me”), DJ Khaled ft. Rick RossLil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend, and Friday (“GOD DID”), Bonnie Raitt (“Just Like That”), and Kendrick Lamar (“The Heart Part 5”) will battle it out for Grammy glory.

The Album of the Year award will go to either ABBA (Voyage), Adele (30), Bad Bunny (Un Verano Sin Ti), Beyoncé (RENAISSANCE), Mary J. Blige (Good Morning Gorgeous – Deluxe), Brandi Carlile (In These Silent Days), Coldplay (Music of the Spheres), Kendrick Lamar (Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers), Lizzo (Special), and Harry Styles (Harry’s House).

The Best New Artist field for 2023 showcases a wide variety of musical styles via Brazilian singer Anitta, multilingual singer-songwriter Omar Apollo, virtuosic young jazz duo DOMi & JD Beck, pop/R&B rising star Muni Long, 24-year-old jazz vocalist Samara Joy, “Big Energy” rapper Latto, Italian rock outfit Måneskin, rapper/actor Tobe Nwigwe, bluegrass picker and singer Molly Tuttle, and the British indie-rock darlings of Wet Leg.

While the corner of the music world we tend to cover here at Live For Live Music often doesn’t figure too prominently into the Grammy picture, a number of artists we love are up for awards at the 2023 ceremony.

DOMi & JD Beck, in addition to their Best New Artist nod, received a nomination in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category for their debut LP, Not Tight. They will contend with Snarky Puppy (Empire Central) and Dave Matthews Band’s Jeff Coffin (Between Dreaming and Joy) for the honor.

Brandi Carlile, in addition to her nods for Record of the Year and Album of the Year, will vie for Best Rock Performance (“Broken Horses”) against BeckThe Black Keys, IDLES, Ozzy Osbourne, and more. She will also contend for Best Rock Song, a category in which Red Hot Chili Peppers (“Black Summer”) are also nominated. Brandi will also compete for Best Americana Performance (“You and Me on the Rock” ft. Lucius) against Bonnie Raitt (“Made Up Mind”), and Blind Boys of Alabama (“The Message”); for Best American Roots Song against Sheryl Crow & Jeff Trott (“Forever”), Bonnie Raitt (“Just Like That”), and Robert Plant and T-Bone Burnett (“High And Lonesome”, recorded by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss); and for Best Americana Album against Raitt (Just Like That…), Plant & Krauss (Raise The Roof), Keb’ Mo’ (Good To Be…), and Dr. John (Things Happen That Way).
