Billy Strings Among Dopapod’s Guests At Tour Closer In Washington D.C.

28

Dopapod delivered a late-night concert at Union Stage in Washington D.C. on Saturday. The quartet welcomed several guests including guitarist Billy Strings for the final show of their 2022 Fall Tour.

Dopapod — guitarist Rob Compa, keyboardist Eli Winderman, bassist Chuck Jones and drummer Neal “Fro” Evans — opened up their lone set with a pairing of “Weird Charlie Pt 2” and “Velcro.” Next came ”Plaese Haalp” and “Picture in Picture” before the band brought out Parliament-Funkadelic trombonist Greg Boyer for “Bats In The Cave.” Dopapod had a stint opening for P-Funk earlier this year. Boyer’s bandmates Garrett “Starchild Jr.” Shider and Benzel Cowan then joined in for a cover of the Sly & The Family Stone classic “If You Want Me to Stay” with Shider on vocals and Cowan on percussion.

Dopapod then went it alone for “Trapper Keeper” and “Fannie” with the latter leading into “Best Friends,” which saw Cowan returning to narrate the song. A cover of Bachman Turner Overdrive’s “Taking Care Of Business” kicked off a three-song, seamless set closing sequence that continued with “Freight Train.” Pigeons Playing Ping Pong’s Jeremy Schon (guitar) and Alex “Gator” Petropulos (drums) emerged for the middle tune with Compa switching over to bass during the jam. The quartet closed out the set with “Nerds.”

Billy Strings — who played at D.C.’s The Anthem earlier that evening — would join Dopapod for the encore. As the band noted in a social media post, “we walked backstage before the encore and the one and only Billy Strings was waiting back there.” Billy would help out on “8 Years Ended,” which saw him team up with Compa for some “guitarmonies” before swapping some fiery riffage.
