Black Star, the iconic hip-hop duo featuring Talib Kweli and yasiin bey (formerly known as Mos Def), hit the intimate Sony Hall near New York’s Times Square on Tuesday night for a special performance presented by Blue Note Entertainment Group and Luminary.

The two rappers became underground hip-hop heroes in 1998 with their debut LP, Most Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star. This past spring, following years of speculation, they released their second Black Star album, No Fear of Time. The record was released exclusively via Luminary, the podcast platform that also hosts Kweli, Bey, and Dave Chappelle‘s podcast, The Midnight Miracle.

The rare live performance by Kweli and bey at Sony Hall came in the wake of the duo’s nationally televised appearance on Saturday Night Live this past weekend, where they offered up renditions of “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing” and “So be it” from their long-awaited sophomore LP.

The lively performance featured Madlib, the new album’s producer, on the decks as Kweli and bey worked through songs from both Black Star albums and their solo catalogs in addition to offering up freestyles that highlighted their famously deep-thinking themes and unparalleled lyricism.
