Cat Power Recreates Infamous 1966 Bob Dylan Concert At Royal Albert Hall

29

Cat Power delivered her recreation of Bob Dylan’s infamous “Royal Albert Hall” concert at the historic London venue on Saturday. While the Dylan show from which the 1998 release The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live 1966, The “Royal Albert Hall” concert actually took place in Manchester, England on May 17, 1966 but was mislabeled and the name stuck.

Bob did deliver similar shows at Royal Albert Hall a few nights later, but the Manchester concert has lived on for posterity thanks to the bootleg. The 1966 world tour was a wild one for Dylan as it was during the infamous “Dylan Goes Electric” era.

The trek saw Bob playing an acoustic set followed by an electric set backed by a group that would eventually become The Band. While die-hard fans of Dylan’s folk output sat enraptured for his acoustic sets, they were not keen on his electric set and let the legendary singer-songwriter know it. It’s pretty mindboggling as to why this was the case as Dylan and The Band were delivering some of the best rock ‘n’ roll of all time.

For her recreation, Cat Power (Chan Marshall) delivered the show in its entirety, offering an acoustic set and an electric set.

“When I finally got the opportunity to play The RAH, it was a no brainer,” Marshall told NME when the show was announced in July. “I just wanted to sing Dylan songs. And as much as any, this collection of his songs, to me, belong there.”

Speaking to The Guardian, Marshall said:

“It’s important for me to not do my thing. I’m not being Bob, not at all. I don’t know how to describe it – I’m just recreating it, that’s all. But not making it mine. I had the inkling that I should protect that period of time and him making that crossover. It’s like this precipice of time that changed music for ever.”
