Turkuaz co-founder Dave Brandwein is back with the second-ever offering from his new solo endeavor Band For Sale, “Is There Anybody?”. The sophomore single will appear on the project’s debut album, Sleeping Sun, Waking Moon, out December 9th.

“Is There Anybody?” immediately washes speakers out with idyllic layers of overdubbed Laurel Canyon guitars. Brandwein’s voice comes howling in like an overhead view of the Los Angeles landscape that the singer/songwriter/producer now calls home. Ornate production with even some horns snuck in drive home the new sonic direction for Brandwein in Band For Sale, a path he says was always his destination from the start.

“This album is who I’ve always been deep down,” Brandwein said. “I grew up on The Beatles, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, and the other classic sounds of the 60’s and 70’s… The truth is that Turkuaz was the departure.”

Brandwein recorded Sleeping Sun, Waking Moon off and on over the past decade but rewrote much of the album several times throughout the years. “Is There Anybody?” was inspired by a college breakup as the singer dealt with feelings of loneliness that cosmically mirror his position after seven of nine members of Turkuaz announced their departure last November.

“Facing the possibility of being on my own again, I had to wonder, ‘Is there anybody? Another person out there that I would find to understand me and feel for me?’ Soon after, I was actually in another relationship which would eventually be my marriage,” Brandwein said. “Oddly, as the record reached completion all these years later, I found myself in the same position once again. It’s strange, and I suppose, could be seen as tragic, but it’s really more bittersweet. It’s as hopeful as it is sad.”

Band For Sale is one of two new projects Brandwein has debuted since Turkuaz’s dissolution. Back in August, he also introduced New Originals, a duo project with producer Rob O’Block, who oversaw the last few Turkuaz albums including Paradiso and Apollyon, which were released this past summer. In addition to Brandwein and O’Block, New Originals includes contributions from Talking HeadsJerry Harrison and Adrian Belew, former Lucius vocalist Andrew Burri, Train drummer Matt Musty, Grace Potter bassist Kurtis Keber, Stepkids drummer Tim Walsh, and original London Souls bassist Kiyoshi Matsuyama.

“I’m just discovering who I am as an adult, sober, not in a relationship or part of a band, living on my own,” Brandwein said. “I’m in a period of rediscovery, which is admittedly terrifying… I am taking this as an opportunity to figure it out. Having all this music come out after this time is kind of like a purging of all these things that made me who I was before and figuring out what the next phase holds.”
