DJ Logic was the guest on the latest episode of JamBase partner Osiris Media’s Comes A Time podcast. The highly influential and collaborative turntablist talked with hosts Oteil Burbridge and Mike Finoia about some of his latest projects, his early influences, meeting Medeski, Martin & Wood and more.
The conversation got going with Logic talking about a recent project he took part in at New York City’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, jazz trumpeter Etienne Charles’ San Juan Hill: A New York Story. San Juan Hill is an old neighborhood in Manhattan, part of which now houses Lincoln Center. Logic gave some history on the area, noting some of the famous musicians from there including piano great Thelonius Monk.
“The history there is so special,” he said, “And it’s great to go back to it and pay homage to what was and not let people forget about what was there. It’s also great that Lincoln Center put this whole thing on. It was a new auditorium called the David Geffen Hall, beautiful, beautiful auditorium. The New York City Philharmonic, the orchestra, they were amazing. Etienne Charles did an amazing job and I had fun playing, it was really cool. Something different playing with an orchestra. The rehearsals were very brutal, but it all came out wonderful. People loved it and I look forward to doing it again.”
Logic is known for his eclectic collaborations and Oteil asked him what the wildest pairing he ever did was. Logic replied Morrocco’s The Master Musicians of Joujouka, who he met through mutual friends like MMW’s Billy Martin and the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart. The DJ spoke what an honor it was to spend time in the Moroccan music collective’s village and experience their culture.
The discussion then turned to to Logic’s own musical history. Burbridge asked him about his origin story and Logic replied that he “landed from outer space.” He then retraced his history growing up in the Bronx and listening to his mom play soul and jazz records. He also spoke about being exposed to early hip hop as the Bronx is widely regarded as the birthplace of the genre. He named some of his early favorites including Run DMC, Jam Master Jay and Grandmaster Flash.
Logic also talked about playing with NYC jazz musicians, including meeting and collaborating with Medeski, Martin & Wood who he met at the famed CBGB. “It’s like one of those Jedi things,” Logic said about teaming up with the trio. “We saw each other and they were kind of like ‘wow, mesmerized, would love to do something with you” and I was like ‘vice versa.’” The turntablist would go on to have a long and fruitful collaborative relationship with artists in the jam band scene that continues to this day.
