James Casey Spreads Yuletide Cheer With New Song ‘Christmafunk’

41

Saxophonist/vocalist James Casey channels Bootsy Collins on “Christmafunk,” the recently released lead single from his pending holiday album, A Little Something For Everyone. The four-track EP arrives digitally on December 5 through 12/23 Records.

A Little Something For Everyone marks Casey’s solo recording debut. Limited edition vinyl sold out immediately after going on sale last week. The longtime Trey Anastasio Band member, who continues to undergo treatment for colon cancer, will donate proceeds from the EP to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and Eastern Virginia Medical School’s HOPES Clinic. The donations will be used to help defray costs to provide free colon cancer screenings for the uninsured.

The Casey-produced and arranged EP was tracked at Brooklyn’s Creamery Studio. James was accompanied by such acclaimed studio veterans as guitarist Randy Runyon, trumpeter Matt Owens, keyboardist Corey Bernhard and bassist Steve Jenkins. All four musicians contributed to “Christmafunk.”

“Christmasfunk” is the lone original on A Little Something For Everyone. James Casey masterfully sings and works spoken word interludes into a song in which he shares memories of Christmas past. In addition to providing vocals and sax, Casey also played drums on “Christmasfunk.” The groovy tune concludes with shredding courtesy of Randy Runyon.
