[Updated] Watch Low’s Alan Sparhawk Perform Powerful ‘When I Go Deaf’ With Trampled By Turtles In Minneapolis

Duluth, Minnesota’s Trampled by Turtles brought out fellow Duluth musician Alan Sparhawk of Low during their concert Saturday in Minneapolis. The show at The Armory began with another Duluth-based musician Charlie Parr performing an opening set.

Trampled By Turtles started their set with “It’s So Hard to Hold On,” one of nine songs played Saturday from their recently released album Alpenglow, which was produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. The third song of the set was a cover of Wilco’s “A Lifetime to Find” from their 2022 album Cruel Country. Those were played alongside selections from across Trampled By Turtles’ catalog, including “The Darkness and the Light” from their 2008 album Duluth.

Elsewhere frontman Dave Simonett led TBT through such favorites as “Wait So Long” off 2010’s Palomino, “The Middle” off 2018’s Life Is Good On The Open Road, and “Codeine” off 2005’s Blue Sky and the Devil, among others. Near the end of the set, Simonnet led the audience in singing “Happy Birthday To You” to bassist Tim Saxhaug.

Simonett then introduced Low guitarist Alan Sparhawk who led the others through “When I Go Deaf.” Sparhawk recorded the song with his wife, co-founding Low drummer Mimi Parker, who sadly died of ovarian cancer on November 5 at age 55. Sparhawk played electric guitar and sang lead on the song that appeared on Low’s 2005 album The Great Destroyer.

After the guest spot brought an end to the set, TBT returned for the encore, which started with setlist staple “Alone” from their 2012 album Stars & Satellites. A rarely played cover of Tom Waits’ “Old Shoes (& Picture Postcards)” came next followed by the Palomino standout “New Son/Burnt Iron.”

The night filled with the music of Duluth was capped with “Whiskey” off TBT’s 2004 debut album, Songs From a Ghost Town.
