Low drummer and vocalist Mimi Parker died Saturday, November 5 at age 55. Parker was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2020.
Parker’s death was confirmed in a message shared by Low, the band she co-founded with her husband Alan Sparhawk. The note was posted early on Sunday, November 6 and stated:
Friends, it’s hard to put the universe into language and into a short message, but …
She passed away last night, surrounded by family and love, including yours. Keep her name close and sacred. Share this moment with someone who needs you. Love is indeed the most important thing.
Parker was born in the northern Minnesota town of Bemidji. She and Sparhawk launched Low in nearby Duluth in 1993. The couple remained constant members of the band while cycling through several different bass players.
Their debut album, I Could Live In Hope was released in 1994 through the Vernon Yard record label. Low issued 13 studio albums, including Things We Lost In The Fire on Kranky in 2001 and The Great Destroyer on Sub Pop in 2005.
They would remain with Sub Pop for 2007’s Drums And Guns, 2011’s C’mon, 2013’s The Invisible Way, 2015’s Ones And Sixes, 2017’s Double Negative and culminating with Hey What that Sub Pop released in 2021.
Known for their captivating live performances, Low was forced to cancel a number of concerts this year while Parker sought cancer treatment. Parker is survived by her and Sparhawk’s children Hollis and Cyrus.
