Lucero will issue a new album, Should’ve Learned By Now, on February 24, 2023 via Liberty & Lament/Thirty Tigers. The album’s second single, “Buy A Little Time,” arrived today.
Lucero previously shared the single, “One Last F.U.” Should’ve Learned By Now sees the Memphis-based band returning to more straightforward rock roots after experimenting with darker soundscapes on previous records: 2018’s Among the Ghosts and 2021’s When You Found Me. Much of the material on the new album was considered too upbeat for the aforementioned LPs.
“I had a particular sound I was looking for on each record and there was no room for any goofy
rock & roll or cute witticisms or even simply upbeat songs,” primary lyricist and frontman
Ben Nichols said. “But now finally, it was time to revisit all of that stuff and get it out in the world. That’s how we got to the appropriately-for-us-titled album Should’ve Learned by Now. The album is basically about how we know we are fuckups and I guess we are ok with that.”
Lucero – Nichols, guitarist Brian Venable, drummer Roy Berry, bassist John C. Stubblefield and keyboardist Rick Steff — teamed up with Grammy-winning producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang (John Prine, Jason Isbell) to craft Should’ve Learned By Now. The band began recording at Sam Phillips Recording Service before finishing up at Ross-Spang’s newly opened Southern Grooves Productions in Memphis.
The latest Should’ve Learned By Now single, “Buy A Little Time,” arrived with a video filmed by the band’s roadie Scott during a soundcheck. Watch it below:
