Margo Price Unveils ‘Lydia,’ A Prescient Song Regarding A Woman’s Right To Choose

Margo Price shared a live performance video and the studio version of her new single, “Lydia,” a song about a downtrodden pregnant woman struggling to make a tough decision that will define her future. The track is the latest preview of Price’s forthcoming new album, Strays, which arrives on January 13 via Loma Vista Recordings and will be supported with an extensive tour that starts later this month.

Co-produced by Margo Price and Jonathan Wilson, the follow-up to 2020’s That’s How Rumors Get Started was recorded at Wilson’s Fivestar Studios facility in California’s Topanga Canyon. Price previously shared Strays singles “Been To The Mountain” and “Change Of Heart.” The 10-track LP sees Margo backed by her longtime band the Pricetags and includes contributions from such guests as Mike Campbell, Lucius and Sharon Van Etten.

The subject matter of “Lydia” is extremely relevant in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe Vs. Wade this past June. However, Price penned the song years back and recorded “Lydia” in 2021. Margo filled the seven verses to the poignant tune with lyrics detailing a character addicted to drugs with limited resources who finds herself between a rock and a hard place.

Margo Price shared the following about “Lydia”:

“I wrote ‘Lydia’ in one sitting in a tiny hotel room after walking around the city of Vancouver one day. I was jet lagged and feeling really depressed, hopeless, but instead of taking a nap, I picked up the guitar and the words just flowed out all in one quick moment. I hit record on my phone to make a demo and sort of blacked out or went into this meditative state, and boom – eight minutes later, I had this song. It’s one of the only songs I’ve ever written that doesn’t have any real melody or even rhyme, but somehow it still works. Songs like that are rare and don’t come often.
“It was inspired by a cacophony of things. There was a women’s health clinic and a methadone clinic with a needle exchange right outside of our venue. I was looking into the eyes of the people I passed and thinking about their stories and really being a conduit for pain.
“The song feels like a premonition now, with women’s rights being stripped and all the abortion bans happening. When I listen back, I hear what might go through a woman’s mind when she has a difficult decision to make about her body, her choices and her future.”

Price assembled at Nashville’s Downtown Presbyterian Church with a string quartet consisting of Chauntee Ross, Nicole Neely, Kristin Weber and leader Larissa Maestro to perform “Lydia.” The live performance video was captured by filmmakers Eric Geadelmann and Kelly Magelky.
