Phish/Talking Heads/Pink Floyd tribute act Pink Talking Fish are known for their inventive sequences connecting the music of the three legendary bands. The quartet pulled off such a memorable pairing this past Friday, November 11 in Portland, Maine, when they worked the Talking Heads classic “Life During Wartime” within a well-jammed cover of The Who’s “Drowned.”

Pink Talking Fish’s Eric Gould returns to ‘The JamBase Podcast’ to discuss his Pink Talking Fish project and much more.
The “Drowned” into “Life During Wartime” into “Drowned” run at The State Theatre had the added bonus of honoring all three groups, as Phish has played the latter 47 times over the past 27 years. Keyboardist Richard James handled lead vocal duties on “Drowned” with bassist Eric Gould helming “Life During Wartime.”
PTF cleverly used an instrumental interlude within the gem from The Who’s 1973 Quadrophenia as the entry and exit point for the Talking Heads’ 1979 single. Eric Gould spoke about the band’s propensity to play unusual combinations during his appearance on the latest episode of The JamBase Podcast. “What I love so much about Pink Talking Fish is really giving people something that they haven’t experienced before with these songbooks,” Gould explained. “Being able to do this transitional stuff and have people get the joy out of what comes next within this stuff is just so cool.”
The quartet featuring Gould, James, guitarist Cal Kehoe and drummer Zack Burwick recently shared pro-shot video of the “Drowned”/”Life During Wartime” pairing. The sequence came early in Pink Talking Fish’s marathon set on Friday. Other highlights included a guest appearance from keyboardist Max Chase on Talking Heads’ “Slippery People,” infusing “Camel Walk” by Phish within Pink Floyd’s “Pigs (3 Different Ones)” and playing a slow and funky version of “Cavern” inspired by Phish’s Island Tour take.
