TABoose Tour Blazes On With More Trey Anastasio Band & Goose Collaborations In Lowell

20

Goose and Trey Anastasio Band brought the second night of their joint tour to Lowell, Massachusetts last night for a show at the Tsongas Center. Through each of the band’s sets, energy was abundant and smiles were everywhere as the many performers took in the spectacle of the night.

Kicking off the night, Goose jumped directly into setlist staple “Drive,” a song that always works well in the opener slot. Similar to a number of recent versions, the quintet continues to skip the middle composed section and “first jam,” opting to jump right into the quicker and groovier “second jam” motif. Keyboardist Peter Anspach shined on this almost 20-minute opener, first on clavinet and then his Vintage Vibe electric piano, recently augmented by a brand-new stereo console “suitcase” amplifier.

Guitarist Rick Mitarotonda led the band through a butter segue into the uptempo “Echo Of A Rose,” letting loose a concise guitar solo to keep the energy high – the crowd was already noticeably more energetic than Wednesday night’s show in Portland, and it was evident that the band could feel it too. “Rockdale” was tapped next and did what it does best – build to a series of screaming peaks that drove the crowd even more nuts. “Same Old Shenanigans” was no different – keeping the energy at a peak level. The lone breather of the set came in “Silver Rising” – another showcase for Mitarotonda’s incredible songwriting as he ripped out another hot guitar solo.

Trey Anastasio was brought on stage to begin the collaborative portion of the evening as Goose energetically ripped into bassist Trevor Weekz-penned jammer “Wysteria Lane.” Just like in Portland, Rick and Trey traded licks like they were old friends throughout the 16-minute rocker. While it lacked the depth of jamming that the Portland “All I Need” boasted, it is clear that Trey continued to push the members of Goose out of their comfort zones jam-wise.

“Arcadia” closed the set in a spectacular fashion – Trey’s vocals on the first verse sounded much more rehearsed than when he sang this quintessential Goose song at Radio City in June. Percussionist Jeff Arevalo had a massive grin on his face as he and drummer Ben Atkind laid down a driving foundation for the two guitarists to shred over as the set closed out.

Both bands’ crews swarmed the stage at set break for a fast turnaround before TAB took the stage for their set around 10 p.m. Opening up with “Cayman Review,” keyboardist Ray Paczkowski’s clav melded perfectly with the rhythm section for a crunchy groove on this TAB staple. The up-tempo TAB arrangement of “Camel Walk” came next, highlighting the horn section and especially saxophonist James Casey, who took a fiery solo to close out the Phish tune.

An atypically early show “Money, Love and Change” kept the crowd grooving and showed that very little momentum and energy had dissipated at set break before instrumental “Olivia” saw trombonist Natalie Cressman stepping to the forefront for an emphatic solo. Phish classic “Ghost” was up next and saw Trey shredding the tune to pieces among vocal embellishments from the horn section. Bassist Dezron Douglas, drummer Russ Lawton and percussionist Cyro Baptista were in perfect lockstep during this jam, both grooving and laying the solid foundation that TAB is known for.

Trey led the band through “A Life Beyond the Dream” and “Simple Twist Up Dave” before using “Dark and Down” to close the main portion of their set. Similar to “Ghost,” the rhythm section laid down a thick foundation for Trey to solo over. Preparing for this tour seems to have kept Trey in fine form – his playing is even stronger than it was over the summer and bodes well for Phish’s upcoming MSG run in December.

Bringing out Rick and Peter from Goose to close out the set, TAB chugged into Phish staples “Back on the Train” and “Steam,” both of which highlighted Rick and Trey’s almost Allman Brothers-like “guitarmony” among blasts of organ and clav from Peter.

Returning for the encore with acoustic guitar in hand, Trey took a moment to note that the last time he had played in Lowell was with Phish on May 16, 1995, the Voters For Choice benefit that saw the debuts of a number of longtime setlist staples. Noting the next song was from that category, Trey played a beautiful rendition of “Theme From the Bottom” on his own before bringing Rick back out to join him on an emotional “Strange Design.”

For the big full-band encore closer, Peter once again returned to share Ray’s keyboard rig as Ben, Trevor, and Jeff from Goose all joined Cyro on percussion as the 13-piece ensemble played their way through a fun and energetic “Blaze On.” As the song wound to a close, Cyro was not done, starting up a drum jam that saw every member of both bands joining in as they walked off stage.

Only two shows into TABoose tour, we have already been treated to some memorable collaborations and moments that will only escalate as the tour goes on – will we get the fabled Jeff/James sax battle?

The tour continues tonight with a sold-out show at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Livestreams are available via nugs.net and LivePhish.com for all of the remaining shows.
