TAUK and Kanika Moore have unveiled the fruits of their new joint venture with “STFU”. The single arrives as the first original release from the partnership between the instrumental jam quartet and the Doom Flamingo vocalist.
Prior to “STFU”, TAUK and Moore had released a cover of Björk’s “Army Of One“. Now, they let their own voices shine (well, technically just Kanika’s voice) with this preview of what’s to come, with guitarist Matt Jalbert teasing on Instagram that there is more music on the way.
Dropping into “STFU”, TAUK noticeably simplifies its instrumentation to make room for one of the most sought-after special guests on the festival circuit. Any sonic space vacated by instruments is immediately occupied by Moore’s commanding vocal performance, as the artists play off each other’s strengths to forge a unique collaboration that is greater than the sum of its parts. TAUK is still given a chance to do what it does best, with Jalbert and keyboardist Alric “A.C.” Carter both finding space for tastefully subdued breakdowns before Kanika brings the song to a crescendo.
“‘STFU’ is about wanting to control a powerful force,” Kanika said of the song she wrote while staying at A.C.’s house, which also contained a rambunctious three-year-old. “A child ‘stomping over me’ was a literal description of what was happening while I was writing the song. I wanted them to turn into a great horned owl; swift and quiet but still strong.”
