Watch Trey Anastasio Explain Why New York Jets Great Deserves Hall Of Fame Induction

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio is a big football fan with a particular fondness for the New York Jets. Anastasio’s favorite player is Nick Mangold, the former Jets center who was selected to the Pro Bowl seven times over his 11-year career. Trey and Nick will be featured on an upcoming episode of NFL Films Presents. A clip of Anastasio detailing why Nick Mangold should be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame has been shared by NFL Films to preview “Phish Stories Or The Real Deal,” which premieres on FS1 tomorrow (Wednesday, November 23) at 9:30 p.m. PT.

“Nick Mangold, to me, represents everything that I love about football and about being on a team,” Anastasio stated at the start of the clip. “You think about the center. He’s got his hand on the ball every single play. Every play. Nick Mangold always showed up.”

While Trey acknowledged the Jets have had a tough go of it in recent decades, he pointed out Mangold was at the heart of the NFL team’s most successful seasons in the 21st Century. “He was drafted in 2006 and that was the era where the team was being built from the inside out, offensive line, the way a football team should be built,” the Princeton, New Jersey native explained. “And lo and behold by 2009, 2010 they had two of their best years ever.”

“He should be in the Hall of Fame,” the guitarist added. “Every football fan is going to be proud to see Nick Mangold in the Hall of Fame because the fans know,” Trey mentioned and went on to quip, “You can’t just put the pretty boys in the Hall of Fame.”

The Anastasio/Mangold connection dates back to last November, when Jets broadcaster Bob Wischusen posed a question on SiriusXM Phish Radio’s Ask Phish special. Wischusen asked who band members would be starstruck to meet. Trey answered Nick Mangold whom he called “the greatest football player in the history of the game.”
