Four years ago today, an upstart power trio wrapped up a debut run at legendary rock palace The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The newly founded Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros brought in an established musician, Warren Haynes, to help them close their premiere appearance at The Cap.
All joking aside, Fall 2018 saw Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros taking their first steps outside the den. The trio — guitarist Bob Weir, drummer Jay Lane and bassist Don Was — has since expanded into a quintet. A five-piece horn and string section, The Wolf Pack, also became a fixture at shows beginning in 2021. Most recently, Bob Weir And Wolf Bros performed with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.

But it all started four years ago with the trio, as Bobby noted in a recent interview with Guitar World. “I woke up one morning with this dream in my head; I was playing in a trio with Don and Jay,” Weir recalled.” I just rolled over, picked up the phone and called Don and asked him if he wanted to do this and he said sure. As the band has grown, parts of our show still focus on the trio because we really can do something.”
Fans at The Capitol Theatre in 2018 got to see that “something” up close. On November 10 the band delivered a first set with Grateful Dead favorites but also tunes harkening back to Bobby and Jay’s Ratdog days. The second set contained a career-spanning collection of Grateful Dead tunes with longtime Dead collaborator Warren Haynes emerging as the trio surged back into “The Other One” from “Stela Blue.” The jazzy jam headed into set closer, Buddy Holly & The Crickets’ “Not Fade Away.” Warren would also join the trio for the encore, Bobby Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light,” which saw the guitarists swapping verses.
