Billy’s Busy 2022: Guitarist Billy Strings Had Another Breakout Year

Looking back as the end of the year approaches, it is clear that 2022 was filled with milestones and memorable experiences for guitarist Billy Strings. Strings made headlines throughout the year as his stature continued to rise.

The guitarist collaborated with a who’s-who of talented musicians, was nominated for and won prestigious awards, headlined new venues, expanded his band, released an album with his father, appeared on television several times, and staged many memorable concerts on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean – with more to come.

While last year’s New Year’s Eve Run (like many others) was canceled, Strings will ring in what’s all but certain to be another eventful year with a two-night stand in New Orleans on December 30 and New Year’s Eve. In 2023, Strings will embark on his first headlining arena tour as the audiences he performs in front of continue to grow.

Strings’ well-deserved upward trajectory skyrocketed this year and deserves a close inspection before closing the door on 2022. Scroll on for a month-by-month review of many of the highlights of a highlight-filled year Billy Strings has had thus far.

February

February 3, 2022: After taking January off from touring, Billy Strings played a four-show run at The Capitol Theatre billed as “Deja Tu — Return to the Experiment.” Strings welcomed banjoist Tony Trischka for a two-song sit-in at the end of the first set of the first night of the run.

February 24, 2022: Molly Tuttle shared a single, “Dooley’s Farm,” featuring Billy Strings. The song appeared on Tuttle’s album, Crooked Tree, which came out in April via Nonesuch Records.

February 24, 2022: Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros capped a two-night stand at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California with a show featuring guest appearances from guitarists Billy Strings and Matty Michna as well as Primus bassist Les Claypool. April 3, 2022: Billy Strings played his song “Hide & Seek” for the 64th Grammy Awards telecast from a rooftop outside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, where the ceremony took place. “Hide & Seek” appeared on Renewal, which was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and Renewal single “Love And Regret” was up for the Best American Roots Performance Grammy. Though Strings did not win in those categories, he contributed to Béla Fleck’s My Bluegrass Heart which won Best Bluegrass Album.

May 12 – 13, 2022: Billy Strings followed his three-show run in Nashville with three concerts in Colorado. The first two marked Strings’ first official headlining concerts at Red Rocks outside Denver, the venue where he previously played an audience-less livestream concert in 2020. Strings had also prior appeared at Red Rocks opening for Greensky Bluegrass in 2019 and he participated in two “Dead On The Rocks” concerts as a guest of Billy And The Kids in 2021.

Strings led TAB through “Meet Me At The Creek” and went electric on Phish classics “Possum,” “The Moma Dance” and “Gotta Jibboo.” Strings and Anastasio dueted on an acoustic “Love & Regret” and “Water In The Sky” before going electric again on “Back On The Train” and “Carini.” Members of Goose were also onstage for parts of Strings’ collaboration.

November 18, 2022: Billy Strings and his father Terry Barber release their first album together, ME/AND/DAD. The album was recorded at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studios and co-produced by Strings and Gary Paczosa. Strings and Barber were backed by an ensemble consisting of bassist Mike Bub, mandolinist Ronnie McCoury, banjoist Rob McCoury and fiddler Michael Cleveland. Featured guests included Jerry Douglas and Jason Carter as well as Strings’ mother/Barber’s wife Debra Barber who sings on “I Heard My Mother Weeping.”
