The Southern rock heroes of Blackberry Smoke pulled into a little more than a “One Horse Town” on Wednesday when they arrived at the House of Blues in Boston. The show on The Whippoorwill 10th Anniversary Tour saw another complete telling of the band’s acclaimed 2012 album.
The Whippoorwill represented the first of many high-water marks to come for Blackberry Smoke, marking the Atlanta rock band’s first appearance in the Top 40 of Billboard‘s Hot 200. Though the band has released four original studio albums, including last year’s anthemic You Hear Georgia which included guest spots from Warren Haynes and Jamey Johnson, The Whippoorwill remains an indelible part of Blackberry Smoke’s legacy.
The marathon 20-song performance saw the band perform the album front-to-back, though managing to sneak in some allusions to its influences with interludes of “When the Levee Breaks” and “Don’t Come Around Here No More” tacked onto “Ain’t Much Left of Me” and “Sleeping Dogs”, respectively. After finishing off the album with “Up the Road”, Blackberry Smoke fit in a smörgåsbord of more recent offerings with tracks from Like An Arrow, Find a Light, and You Hear Georgia.
For the encore, Blackberry Smoke did “What Comes Naturally” before closing out the evening with “Old Scarecrow”.
