Folk triumvirate Bonny Light Horseman traveled to Brooklyn on Wednesday for a show at Music Hall of Williamsburgh. The concert, and tour, come in support of the band’s sophomore album, Rolling Golden Holy, released back in October.

There’s an air of ease to Bonny Light Horseman that goes beyond the group’s gentle acoustic arrangements. Each member of the trio has already found success on their own: Eric D. Johnson has served as a folk mainstay for the past quarter century as leader of Fruit Bats; multi-instrumentalist Josh Kaufman has showcased his talents in works with The National and Hiss Golden Messenger; and Anaïs Mitchell has made a name for herself as a solo singer-songwriter and developed her 2010 album Hadestown into a Tony-winning Broadway musical.

The band’s 2020 self-titled debut was largely filled with reimaginings of centuries-old English folk songs and fetched a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. For the follow-up, the band came together during the height of the Delta variant wave to commit its own voice to tape. On Rolling Golden Holy, Bonny Light Horseman takes contemporary stories and frames them within the Anglo-American folk tradition.

“There’s an interesting thing that happens with the three of us where the sounds that we make are also widely different from one another and yet they compliment each other so well,” Kaufman told The Independent in a recent interview. “It sounds like a cliche but what I mean is there’s not a lot of canceling out, it’s like a spectrum of colors where each of us is a very different part of it. When you step back from it, you can see all those separate colors very clearly and they make a complete picture.”
