After playing two nights at The State Theatre in Portland, ME on the 28th and 29th, Dark Star Orchestra arrived at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY ready to kick off a two-night New Year’s run in raucous fashion.

As per usual, the band selected a setlist from the Grateful Dead‘s archive to recreate in its entirety—in this case, the Dead’s show from December 27th, 1978 at Golden Hall in San Diego, CA. DSO stayed true to the setlist, opening with Chuck Berry‘s “Promised Land”, followed by a string of bluegrass country-inspired Dead tunes including “Friend of the Devil”, which took on a slow reggae feel, the tradition “Peggy-O”, Merle Hagard‘s “Mama Tried”, and “Mexicaly Blues”. “Cassidy” also reared its head between “Friend of the Devil” and “Peggy-O”. “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” came next, followed by a joyous “Franklin’s Tower” and a set-closing “The Music Never Stopped”.

Set two got to an upbeat start with “Bertha” and “Good Lovin’” before DSO slowed things down with “Ship of Fools”. The traditional “Samson and Delilah” then gave way to “Terrapin Station”—a definite highlight of the show and of the original 1978 Dead concert. “Playing in the Band” followed ahead of “Drums” and “Not Fade Away”. “Black Peter” offered the crowd a chance to catch its breath before the band concluded the set with Chuck Berry’s “Around and Around”, making the two-set show a Chuck Berry cover sandwich.

After an encore break, DSO played “U.S. Blues” just as the Dead had done 44 years prior but then departed from the 1978 setlist for the only time, appending The Band‘s “The Shape I’m In” to the encore.
