A devoted and ever-growing community of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard fans is the focus of 1063 Days, a fan-made mini-documentary that recently premiered on YouTube. The 20-minute film takes its name from the time between the Australian rock band announcing a marathon show at Red Rocks in November of 2019 and finally taking the stage at the idyllic Morrison, Colorado venue on October 10, 2022.
King Gizz’s Red Rocks debut was postponed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The group wound up performing three marathon shows at the famed natural amphitheater this past fall with 1063 Days mainly filmed during a fan gathering held before the second performance (October 11, 2022).
“It is a rabid obsession, but it’s also one of those things that you can’t quite put your finger on,” a King Gizz devotee noted at the start of the film. “It’s really like a psychedelic trip in its own ways. You can’t quite put your finger on why it speaks to you but it does.” A number of fans talk about their obsession with the band and how they first learned about King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. They detail the connection they feel with other followers.
Many of those interviewed held onto their tickets over the full 1,063-day period. “All the heartbreaks that led up to this was insane,” one fan explained. “I posted on my Instagram today real war veterans have had these tickets in their AXS accounts for three years now.” King Gizz followers from around the world assembled at Red Rocks. “The Red Rocks gigs feel very important for their status and their popularity,” stated a fan who flew in from England. “I feel like everybody on the planet went through their own personal hell over the pandemic in 2020 and then 2021 on top of that,” added another. “All of those personal touch things that change in your life in that time, but having King Gizzard as part of the soundtrack for all of that has been a pretty constant thing.”
One fan hiked the Continental Divide to Steamboat Springs and didn’t expect to score a ticket. However, the hiking community helped him gain entry to the show.
Another element that connects King Gizzard fans is how they try to spread word of the band among their friends. “I spill about King Gizzard to everyone to the point where my friends who don’t listen to that kind of music are still supportive of how much I love it,” said a Red Rocks attendee. “But when you can actually dive into that with other people, I feel like I’m living my life’s mission kinda shit.”
King Gizzard is incredibly profilic with 23 studio albums released thus far. “I always say there’s a King Gizzard album for everybody,” stated one fan. “If you don’t like King Gizzard there’s an album for you. You’re gonna find something that you vibe with.”
