Phil Lesh took part in Warren Haynes‘ Christmas Jam benefit concert on Saturday at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina. The Phil Lesh & Friends lineup came close to reuniting The Quintet configuration and threw down some songs from “The Q” repertoire.
For a 2000 tour, Phil Lesh assembled one of the most famed Phil & Friends lineups that became to be known as The Qunitet or, “The Q.” The five-piece led by the Grateful Dead bassist consisted of guitarists Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes, drummer John Molo and keyboardist Rob Barraco. Nearly the same lineup got together at Christmas Jam save for Herring. Another stellar guitarist and Lesh collaborator, John Scofield, stepped into Jimmy’s spot at Christmas Jam.
Phil Lesh & Friends kicked off the set with two “Q” tunes — Wilson Pickett’s “In The Midnight Hour,” which headed into the GD rarity, “Mason’s Children,” with Warren, Phil and Rob sharing vocal duties. The Grateful Dead played the song for just a little over two months in late 1969 to early 1970, albeit in heavy rotation. Dead classics “Brown-Eyed Women” and an exploratory “Shakedown Street” followed.
A favorite Q cover, The Beatles’ “I Am The Walrus,” came next ahead of substantial versions of “Morning Dew” and “Eyes Of The World.” A rendition of Miles Davis’ “So What,” a number The Q performed last year at their Capitol Theatre reunion, followed. The beloved pairing of “Help On The Way” and “Slipknot!” then set the table for the epic “Terrapin Station.” Phil led the band through one of his signature songs, “Box Of Rain,” to bring the performance to a close.
