Look Mom We’re On TV: Memorable Television Debuts In 2022

87

Performing on television is a significant achievement in the career of a musician as it brings about national prominence and exposure to a potentially massive (and new) audience. In 2022, JamBase covered several musicians making a variety of TV debuts that marked career milestones.

For some, it was their first time on television altogether. Others made the pivotal late-night television premiere, while others crossed over to daytime TV for the first time. And in some instances, it was an initial appearance on a long-running program that brought their music onto the screens around the country and beyond.

Scroll on for a look back at memorable television debuts that took place throughout 2022.

Neal Francis – CBS Mornings – (Can’t Stop The Rain)

Chicago-based keyboardist Neal Francis will cap another impressive year with a New Year’s Eve concert in Denver with Karina Rykman (who frequently appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers as part of the house band throughout 2022). Francis’ busy year included joining Wilco onstage at their Sky Blue Sky event in Mexico, releasing his Sentimental Garbage EP and touring and collaborating with Marcus King. On February 19, Francis made his national television debut with a “Saturday Sessions” performance on CBS Mornings. The keyboardist played a trio of songs off his 2021 album, In Plain Sight, “Can’t Stop The Rain,” “Alameda Apartments” and “Problems.”

Kevin Morby – Jimmy Kimmel Live

This year saw singer-songwriter Kevin Morby put out his seventh album as a solo artist, This Is Photograph. The well-received, lushly produced, and at times, deeply personal album earned Morby praise from fans and critics alike. The effort was further rewarded with Morby’s first late-night television appearance on the June 22 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. Morby was backed by singers from the Stax Academy of Music for a performance of the title track, “This Is A Photograph” on the episode proper, and he also recorded his 2016 song “Beautiful Strangers” as a web exclusive.

Post Malone with Robin Pecknold – Saturday Night Live (Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol)

Post Malone made his Saturday Night Live debut on May 14 when he appeared as musical guest on the episode hosted by Selena Gomez. Malone’s performance was not the only debut to go down at 30 Rock that night as Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold was part of a choir of vocalists who joined Posty on the debut performance of their co-write “Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol.” Malone’s SNL debut also saw him joined by hip hop artist Roddy Ricch for their collaborative song, “Cooped Up.” Both songs appeared on Malone’s album Twelve Carat Toothache which came out in June.

Joy Oladokun – Austin City Limits

Outside of Nashville, country/Americana music’s second home is in Austin, Texas. For Nashville-based singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun – whose music falls somewhere in the realm of country, Americana, blues and rock – getting the call to appear on Austin City Limits is no small feat. Oladukun made her ACL debut on January 15 on an episode featuring St. Vincent (making her third appearance on the “longest-running music series in television history”). Oladukun performed songs from her breakthrough 2021 album, in defense of my own happiness, including “Taking The Heat,” the performance of which was dedicated to the late rapper Mac Miller.

Charley Crockett – Jimmy Kimmel Live

In 2021, Texas native Charley Crockett was named the Americana Music Awards’ Emerging Artist of the Year following the release of two albums. In 2022, Crockett again released a pair of LPs, putting out The Man From Waco and the fourth installment in his covers series, Lil G.L. Presents: Jukebox Charley. The prolific singer-songwriter represented the Lonestar State with his December 8 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, which marked the 38-year-old’s first late-night TV performance. Crockett’s first time on Kimmel featured The Man From Waco track “I’m Just A Clown.”

Madi Diaz – Jimmy Kimmel Live

Host Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show on ABC was fertile ground for debuts throughout the year, as further evidenced by Madi Diaz’s December 6 appearance. The singer-songwriter’s busy 2022 included the release of the guest-filled EP Same History, New Feelings, made up of four reworked songs from her 2021 album, History Of A Feeling. In August of this year, Diaz recorded a “Saturday Sessions” set for CBS Mornings and taped a “Tiny Desk Concert” for NPR. On Kimmel, Diaz delivered the History Of A Feeling standout, “Crying In Public” backed by drummer Aaron Steele and bassist Adam Popick.

Kamasi Washington – The Tonight Show

Jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington has no shortage of esteemed credits accumulated over the past +15 years. The 41-year-old broke out in 2015 with his aptly named album, The Epic, coming into his own as a bandleader and influencing the current sound of jazz. Despite those accolades – he’s performed with the likes of jazz legend Herbie Hancock, hip-hop stars Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar, current jazz masters Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin, rock guitarist St. Vincent and dozens of others – it was not until February 2 that Kamasi Washington was invited to late-night television for a performance on The Tonight Show. Fronting a stellar 13-piece band, Washington led the ensemble through “Garden Path,” which was released the day prior and marked the saxophonist’s first new, original music since last June.

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram – CBS Mornings (662)

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram burst onto the blues scene as a 20-year-old guitarist with his 2019 debut album, Kingfish. In 2022, the now 23-year-old earned the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album for his 2021 sophomore LP, 662, which was titled after the area code of his native Clarksdale, Mississippi. Shortly after taking home the Grammy, Ingram made his national television debut on April 16 when he performed for CBS Mornings’ “Saturday Sessions.” Ingram and his band played the award-winning album’s title track and “Long Distance Woman,” as well as “Outside Of This Town” from his debut record.
