Yo La Tengo’s eight-night Hanukkah series at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City continued on Tuesday night and again featured several special guests. Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo and singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus were among the musicians who accompanied the band on night three of the run.
Ranaldo, who played guitar and bells, joined Yo La Tengo throughout most of Tuesday’s show, like his former Sonic Youth bandmate Steve Shelley did on drums on Monday night. Also augmenting YLT for the majority of the performance was Ryan Sawyer on drums and Bill Nace on taishōgoto. The show, which was a benefit for the Southern Environmental Law Center, opened with sets by the Burnt Sugar Arkestra and comedian David Cross as Rabbi Sugarman.
Yo La Tengo, Ranaldo, Sawyer and Nace began Tuesday’s main set with a cover of “Turn On Your Lovelight” with altered lyrics to reference the eight nights of Hanukkah. Additional covers that landed in the setlist included Bob Dylan’s “Love Minus Zero/No Limit” and The Velvet Underground’s “Run Run Run.”
The rest of the setlist was made up of originals, with Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew delivering “I’m On My Way” and “Paul Is Dead” without any guests. “Let’s Do It Wrong,” from YLT’s 2018 There’s A Riot Going On was the newest song to make the setlist on Tuesday, which otherwise mostly relied on much earlier releases.
After starting the encore with Carole King and Gerry Goffin’s “Take A Giant Step,” Yo La Tengo brought out Dacus for the rest of the encore. Her guest spot started by leading a rendition of “Walking In The Rain” (written by Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil and Phil Spector). Dacus then added guitar and sang lead on a performance of her song “First Time.” The encore ended with Dacus assisting on Carole King’s “Home Again.”
