Mike Dillon & Punkadelick Lament The Destruction Of Nature With “Pandas”, Share 2023 Tour Dates [Listen]

68

Mike Dillon & Punkadelick lament the panda bear’s perilous position on their new instrumental single “Pandas”. The second single from their forthcoming album, Inflorescence (due January 27th via Royal Potato Family), arrives with 24 new tour dates, including headlining shows and support slots with Marco Benevento and Spafford.

“‘Pandas’ was composed in my apartment above Checkpoint Charlie’s off Frenchman Street in New Orleans,” Mike Dillon explained. “I had been meditating on the destruction of natural habitats for human convenience all the while painfully aware of the homeless situation in our own cities. So you might say the song is a meditation on the helpless nature of the panda bear’s imminent demise, but also a metaphor for our own social fabric hanging by a thread.”

Layered vibraphone and marimba open the dreamy track before keyboardist Brian Haas enters with a lyrical melody on melodica. Nikki Glaspie follows suit, transforming the tune with a characteristically solid backbeat drum groove as additional mallet percussion and bass flesh out the sound. The song is simple but refined in true Punkadelick fashion—at once rudimentary and symphonic.

“We’re students of the titans of music. We grew up listening to punk and rock ‘n’ roll but we also love instrumental music—particularly the forefathers of Black American Music. In our minds, Led Zeppelin and Milt Jackson, Parliament-Funkadelic and The Minutemen, The Bad Brains and Frank Zappa are interconnected,” said Mike Dillon. “All that comes together in how we approach instrumental creative music. Punk rock, funk and jazz are not prefab things, they’re about freedom. We have no genre restriction in this band, and people who get it really respect that.”

Along with the release of “Pandas”, Mike Dillon & Punkadelick have announced 24 new tour dates in winter and spring 2023. The dates include stops in the Midwest, Colorado, the Southeast, and the Northeast, with bills also featuring Marco Benevento, Spafford, and lespecial. The band will also make its Jam Cruise debut when the sets sail in February. Click below to view a full list of dates.
