Swedish guitarist Patrik Lundgren, who offers free lessons through the popular YouTube channel Flatpick Nation, has been a huge Billy Strings fan for a long time. Patrik finally had a chance to see the guitarist he calls “his hero” perform live last night in Stockholm and persuaded Billy to bring him on stage at Slaktykran to re-propose to his wife.
The romantic gesture came towards the end of Strings’ second set on Thursday in Stockholm. Lundgren took the stage and hugged Billy. “Patrik’s got a few things he wants to say to y’all,” Strings informed the crowd. Patrik Lundgren then said the following:
“I’m not here to play guitar. But, four years ago I married my wife and I love her a lot. But four years ago, I didn’t have the money for the right ring,” Lundgren explained. “So, I got a new job — I’m gonna keep this short — and I want to remarry my wife.” Patrik’s wife then emerged at which point he took a knee and re-proposed to his wife, Laura, with a proper ring. She said yes and the pair kissed to seal the deal. Strings followed with “a courting song” as he dusted off the traditional “Shady Grove” for the first time in 40 shows.

Last night’s Billy Strings show was the guitarist’s third stop of his first European tour. Strings, bassist Royal Masat, mandolinist Jarrod Walker, banjoist Billy Failing and fiddler Alex Hargreaves played 26 songs in Stockholm. The five-piece performed just two tunes off 2021’s Renewal and instead put the focus on covers with 16 making the setlist.
The tour continues in Berlin on Saturday. Livestreams are available of upcoming shows in Amsterdam (December 4), London (December 7) and Dublin (December 9).
