Grab your pipe and slippers and pour yourself half a cup of rock and rye, ’tis the season to curl up by the fire and enjoy a bit of holiday cheer. No need to mess with the chimney, though, thanks to the Grateful Dead yule log. Now streaming via the Grateful Dead YouTube channel, the virtual holiday hearth plays video of a crackling fire and, of course, classic Dead jams.

This year’s yule log features recordings from Winterland 1973: The Complete Recordings, which was released as a live album in 2008. Recorded on November 9th, 10th, and 11th, 1973, the 9CD set was the second release to feature an entire run of concerts (excluding the first night’s encore), following the release of Fillmore West 1969: The Complete Recordings in 2005.

The shows come from a beloved era in Grateful Dead history, after the band’s famed 1972 European tour and before Mickey Hart rejoined the group. The original audio was recorded on two-channel analog tapes, which were then transferred to a digital format and edited using a digital signal processing system called Clarity. That process helped fix issues created by minor variations in the tape speed of the original tape recorder, correcting for pitch and tempo and eliminating wow and flutter. The result is a recording that sounds crisp and clear—the crackling you hear in the background is just from the fire.
