Yo La Tengo reached the halfway point of their eight-night Hanukkah run at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City on Wednesday with another guest-filled concert. Ramones drummer Marky Ramone joined the band for the encore that featured many of the seminal punk band’s anthemic songs.
Hinting at what was to come, night four opened with an instrumental take on the Ramones’ classic “Blitzkrieg Bop.” Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew followed with “Stockholm Syndrome,” before welcoming Greg Peterson of The Scene Is Now to add guitar and keyboards to “Little Eyes.” Peterson remained onstage while baritone saxophonist Cheryl Kingan (75 Dollar Bill/The Special Pillow) came out for “Today Is The Day.”
Openers Angel Dean & Sue Garner added to the conglomerate as they joined subsequent covers of “Ice Tea” by The Shams and “Je T’Aime… moi non plus” by Serge Gainsbourg. Dean and Garner exited, leaving Kingan and Peterson for “Tears Are In Your Eyes.”
The guests left Kaplan, Hubley and McNew ahead of the live debut of “Apology Letter,” which was recorded for the band’s 2023 album, This Stupid World. An acoustic “Periodically Double or Triple” trailed the new song premiere, followed by “For You Too” from their most recent album, 2018’s There’s A Riot Going On.
The rest of the set pulled from earlier releases, with “Out The Window,” “Double Dare” and “Pass the Hatchet, I Think I’m Goodkind” filling in the setlist. The third The Velvet Underground cover of the run, “I Found A Reason,” was the final song of the main set.
Wednesday’s show included an opening set by comedian Aparna Nancherla and benefited Sunset Spark. Tom Kenny (the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants) hosted the festivities as Kenzie Matthews and Dawn Richard provided the mix CD.
Back in 2008 during Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah run at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, New Jersey, the band brought out Jon Wurster (Superchunk, The Moutain Goats) dressed up as Marky Ramone, playing it off as if it was really the Ramones’ drummer. Last night at The Bowery, the authentic Marky Ramone sat in with Yo La Tengo for the entire encore. Tom Kenny supplied vocals throughout the encore as well, which began with “Rockaway Beach.” Next was “Can’t Make It On Time,” followed by a cover of The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby.”
