While Skerik was the North Beach Music Festival’s Artist-at-Large this past weekend, the saxophonist wasn’t the only musician with a full dance card. Guitarist Tim Palmieri made the rounds in Miami Beach performing with moe., Dopapod, Cool Cool Cool, Blue Star Radiation and Lotus in Miami Beach.
North Beach Music Festival (NBMF) returned for its second outing from Friday, December 9 through Sunday, December 11 at the Miami Beach Bandshell. This year the event was expanded to three days and featured late-night performances for the first time.
moe. headlined Friday’s action with two sets. As Chuck Garvey continues his recovery from a stroke, guitarist Al Schnier, drummer Vinnie Amico, bassist Rob Derhak and percussionist Jim Loughlin were joined by keyboardist Nate Wilson and guitarist Suke Cerulo at NBMF as they have been throughout 2022.

Skerik emerged during the moe.’s first set to add sax to an exploratory cover of Traffic’s “Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys.” The band went heavy on beloved staples in Miami including “Plane Crash,” “Buster,” “Meat” and St. Augustine.” Palmieri’s first appearance of the festival came at the end of moe.’s second set, when he joined the band for a fiery version of “The Pit.”
Dopapod guitarist Rob Compa missed the North Beach Music Festival as he and his wife are expecting their first child. Palmieri did an impressive job covering for Compa in Miami Beach on Saturday. Tim, keyboardist Eli Winderman, bassist Chuck Jones and drummer Neal Evans kicked off their nine-song set with “Velcro” off 2022’s Dopapod and live staple “Indian Grits.” Skerik then collaborated with the quartet on Ernest Ranglin’s “Surfin’.” While Dopapod mostly focused on instrumentals, Tim Palmieri handled lead vocals for the group’s take on the Black Sabbath gem “Into The Void.” A run of “Brookline Bridge,” “New James” and “Onionhead” concluded the set.

Lotus closed out the NBMF on Saturday. The band — Palmieri, multi-instrumentalists Luke Miller and Jesse Miller, drummer Mike Greenfield and percussionist Chuck Morris — delivered a career-spanning two-hour set on the Park Stage. A cover of Todd Terje’s “Inspector Norse” opened and gave way to fan-favorite “Shimmer And Out.” More older material followed in “Suitcases And Sandwiches” and “Expired Slang.”
The set rolled on with staple “Expired Slang” before Lotus looked to their latest album, 2022’s Bloom & Recede, for “Time Dilates.” From there, the quintet played Jesse Miller’s “Age Of Inexperience” and Luke Miller’s “Greet The Mind.” Lotus concluded the frame by pairing “Spiritualize” and “Gilded Age.”
Later in the night, Palmieri and his Blue Star Radiation bandmates took the stage for an official NBMF after party at The Citadel. Tim then sat-in on “Hair” and “Tied Up” with Cool Cool Cool on Sunday afternoon. North Beach Music Festival performances were livestreamed on Volume.com with proceeds from viewer donations contributed to the Red Cross’ Hurricane Ian Disaster Relief Efforts.
