Trombonist Brian Thomas Goes Solo On Debut Album ‘On The Bone’

47

Boston-based trombonist/composer/educator Brian Thomas released his debut solo album, On The Bone. Produced by Thomas, On The Bone was recorded, mixed and mastered by Soulive‘s Alan Evans at Iron Wax Studios in Western Massachusetts.

“Al knows exactly what to do to make the musicians comfortable to perform at a high level and has the perfect musical sensibility to help capture a classic soul jazz vibe I was going for,” said Thomas.

Thomas and Evans have frequently collaborated in the studio on projects for Akashic Record, BT ALC Big Band, Duochrome and other sessions for Evans’ label Vintage League Music. On The Bone sees Thomas supported by Darby Wolf on Hammond organ, Johnny Trama on guitar, Tom Arey on drums and Yahuba Garcia-Torres on percussion.

Also appearing on the album is L.A.-based saxophonist Scott Mayo on “Turn On,” which was written by renowned educator and woodwind specialist Roger Eckers, who mentored both Thomas and Mayo in their hometown of Rochester, New York, and sadly recently passed away. The title track, “On The Bone,” features Thomas’ longtime friend and collaborator, saxophonist Mike Tucker.

Thomas and his band will celebrate the release and record a live video on December 30 at The Extended Play Sessions Fallout Shelter in Norwood, Massachusetts.

On The Bone is currently available exclusively via Bandcamp. The album lands on other streaming platforms on January 27, 2023.
