Watch Dave Matthews Honor Paul Simon With Joyful ‘You Can Call Me Al’ Cover

Dave Matthews was among the all-star performers featured on Homeward Bound: A Grammy Salute To Paul Simon, a special which premiered on CBS last night. Matthews led the talented house band and vocalist through a rousing rendition of Simon’s 1986 hit “You Can Call Me Al” as part of the two-hour special.

Homeward Bound was filmed this past April at Pantages in April. Woody Harrelson served as host with former Tonight Show bandleader Rickey Minor tapped as music director. Minor assembled a 17-member house band that included a full horn section.

Brad Paisley kicked off the special with “Kodachrome” before The Jonas Brothers emerged for “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover.” Next came Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood pairing up on “The Boxer” and Susanna Hoffs fronting the house band on “A Hazy Shade Of Winter.” Other highlights included Sting’s intimate “America” performance, Billy Porter reworking “Loves Me Like A Rock,” New Orleans-based musicians Trombone Shorty and Irma Thomas uniting on “Take Me To Mardi Gras” and Jimmy Cliff collaborating with Shaggy for “Mother And Child Reunion.”

Paul Simon himself appeared on stage towards the end of the special. He backed Rhiannon Giddens sans house band on “American Tune,” performed “Graceland” with the full ensemble and went solo for the evening’s “The Sound Of Silence” finale. Speaking of Graceland, the album’s “Homeless” was covered by Take 6 while Matthews and Kidjo led “Under African Skies” and the aforementioned “You Can Call Me Al.”

Dave Matthews had never performed “You Can Call Me Al” previously. Matthews showed off his dance moves towards the end of the cover. While Minor handled bass duties throughout the concert, original Graceland bassist Bakithi Kumalo also added to “Al” and played his signature solo. Kidjo and Take 6 provided backing vocals.
