Watch Fleet Foxes Triumphantly Play Song About Chilean Musician/Activist Victor Jara In Santiago

37

Fleet Foxes performed their song “Jara” live for the first time during their set Wednesday at the Fauna Primavera Festival in Santiago, Chile. The debut took place in the native country of Chilean folk singer and political activist Victor Jara, who inspired the song from the band’s 2020 album, Shore.

Shortly after the release of Shore, Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold discussed “Jara” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, in which he said he hoped it would “venerate some friends of mine who are really active activists and are very politically involved.”

Pecknold further detailed the song, telling EW:

“Politics are really important to me and it helps me stay involved when I have friends who are even that much more active. That song [“Jara”] is equating those friends of mine to Victor Jara — the Chilean folk singer who is a national hero — and thinking about the people in my private life who serve that similar role that Victor Jara does in public. It was super inspiring working on that one.”
