Watch Jack Black, Dave Grohl & Greg Kurstin Power Through A Rush Classic

Jack Black channels Geddy Lee on “The Spirit Of Radio” for the latest installment of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and producer/keyboardist Greg Kurstin‘s “The Hanukkah Sessions” video series. Footage of the Rush cover arrived on Saturday evening to celebrate the seventh night of Hanukkah.

Grohl and Kurstin launched the series featuring a different song by a Jewish artist for each night of Hanukkah back in 2020. The pair recorded the 2020 and 2021 editions in the studio. For 2022, Dave and Greg hosted a star-studded concert at the 250-capacity Largo club in Los Angeles on December 5 where each of this year’s videos was filmed. Beck, Karen O, Judd Apatow and Dave’s daughter, Violet Grohl were among those who starred 2022 “Hanukkah Sessions” videos.

Rush released “The Spirit Of Radio” on their 1980 studio album Permannent Waves. The song is among the Canadian trio’s most-beloved tunes. “Geddy Lee’s mother was so proud of her son that she put Rush posters up all over their family store and gave away Rush albums to kids who didn’t have money to buy them. In tribute to that proud Jewish mother, we give you — free of charge—“The Spirit Of Radio” featuring Jack Black!” reads a note accompanying the video.

Kurstin covered Geddy Lee’s bass lines with one hand and Alex Lifeson’s guitar riffs with the other. Greg impressively pulled off both parts on keys while sticking true to the original. Jack’s Tenacious D bandmate, Kyle Gass emerged after the “concert hall” lyric with a sign reading “applause.”
