Watch Katie Jacoby & Scott Metzger Join Gov’t Mule On CSNY Cover At Return Of Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam

33

Warren Haynes brought back his Christmas Jam all-star benefit concert on Saturday to Asheville’s Harrah’s Cherokee Center after a three-year hiatus. The host took the stage with both Gov’t Mule and Phil Lesh & Friends as part of a night that also featured sets from Dinosaur Jr., Brothers Osborne, Tyler Childers and more. As usual, Mule delivered a guest-filled performance with Katie Jacoby, Scott Metzger, Rob Barraco and Audley Freed among those who sat-in.

Gov’t Mule began their nine-song set as a trio with keyboardist Danny Louis out of action. Haynes, bassist Jorgen Carlsson and drummer Matt Abts kicked off the frame by pairing oldies “Mule” and “Temporary Saint.” Warren noted the keyboardist’s absence after “Temporary Saint” and pointed out a few in the crowd wearing Danny Louis hats. Keyboardist Rob Barraco then emerged for the rest of the set starting with original “Banks Of The Deep End.” Barraco was on hand for the Phil Lesh & Friends’ performance that also featured Haynes and John Scofield on guitar and John Molo on drums.

Audley Freed emerged to join Haynes, Carlsson and Barraco for takes on The Black Crowes’ “Sometimes Salvation” and Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City.” The former hadn’t been played since the 2018 installment of Gov’t Mule’s Island Exodus destination event. Warren then invited surprise guest George Porter Jr. as well as drummer Jeff Sipe and guitarist Mike Barnes to contribute to Gov’t Mule’s first cover of Little Feat’s “Sailin’ Shoes” since 2015. George Porter Jr. went on to lead the ensemble through The Meters classic “Hey Pocky Way.”

Saturday’s Gov’t Mule set rolled on with fiddler Katie Jacoby and her husband, guitarist Scott Metzger joining Haynes, Abts, bassist Robert Kearns and Barraco on a memorable version of Crosby Stills Nash & Young’s “Almost Cut My Hair.” Mule’s previous take on the song from CSNY’s Deja Vu came back in September of 2018. Metzger and Jacoby then departed as Warren, Rob Barraco, Matt Abts, Jorgen Carlsson and Brothers Osborne’s John Osborne played the beloved Allman Brothers Band tune “Blue Sky” to close the Gov’t Mule set.
