Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy Honors Christine McVie With Fleetwood Mac Cover In Michigan

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy worked a tribute to Christine McVie into his solo acoustic concert on Friday night in Three Oaks, Michigan. Tweedy covered the Christine-penned Fleetwood Mac classic “Little Lies” early in the show at the Acorn Theater.

Tweedy’s “Little Lies” came two days after Christine McVie died at age 79. Stevie Nicks, Beach House, Jim James, Mick Fleetwood, HAIM and Mike Campbell were among those who shared Christine McVie remembrances on social media in the wake of her death.

Christine McVie wrote “Little Lies” with her husband at the time, Eddy Quintela. Fleetwood Mac released the song on their 1987 album, Tango In The Night. “Little Lies” peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and spent four weeks at the top of Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart.

Jeff Tweedy opened Friday’s show with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You.” He then looked to Wilco’s 2022 LP, Cruel Country, for “I Am My Mother” and its title track. Next, Jeff trotted out oldie “Via Chicago” and The Whole Love standout “One Sunday Morning (Song For Jane Smiley’s Boyfriend),” a song last played by Wilco in 2014. Tweedy then offered his stripped-down interpretation of “Little Lies.”

The rest of Friday’s 23-song concert went heavy on Wilco classics including “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart,” “Dawned On Me,” “Hummingbird,” “Passenger Side,” “Jesus, Etc.” and “I’m The Man Who Loves You.” Jeff also played “Laminated Cat” from his Loose Fur project, “New Madrid” from his time in Uncle Tupelo and “You Are Not Alone,” among other tunes. The latter was penned by Tweedy as the title track for a 2010 Mavis Staples album he produced.
