Yo La Tengo held the final show of their eight-night Hanukkah run at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City on Sunday (December 25). Members of the legendary opening act the Sun Ra Arkestra joined the band for an extended collaboration during the evening’s main set.
In addition to a set by the Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen, Sunday’s lineup included comedian Carole Montgomery. The concert benefited World Live International and DJ Stashu compiled the mix CD.
Yo La Tengo began their performance with James McNew leading a cover of “It’s Christmas Time,” which was written by Sun Ra and recorded by the doo-wop group The Qualities and issued in 1960 by Sun Ra’s El Saturn record label. The setlist was filled in with Yo La Tengo staples such as “Autumn Sweater,” “Let’s Save Tony Orlando’s House,” “Alyda,” “Nowhere Near” and “Upside Down,” among a few others.

Members of the Sun Ra Arkestra – saxophonists James Stewart and Knoel Scott, trumpeter Cecil Brooks and trombonist Dave Davis – then made their way back onstage where they remained for the rest of the main set. A cover of Daniel Johnston’s “Speeding Motorcycle” started the collaboration. Next was Georgia Hubley singing lead on Sun Ra’s “Dreaming.” The horns also augmented “All the Glitter Is Gone” and a cover of Rex Garvin & the Mighty Cravers’ “Emulsified.” An upbeat boogie/doo-wop arrangement of “More Stars Than There Are In Heaven” followed before McNew led a closing cover of Sun Ra’s “Nuclear War.”
Night eight’s encore began with Big Star’s “Take Care,” written by Alex Chilton. Jefferson Airplane’s “3/5 Of A Mile In 1/10 Of A Second” was dedicated to Jorma Kaukonen, who celebrated his 82nd birthday on December 23. As was often the case during this year’s Hanukkah run, a Velvet Underground cover made it into the setlist in the form of “I Can’t Stand It.”
The finale was the traditional YLT offering of “My Little Corner Of The World” accompanied by Ira Kaplan’s mother Marilyn Kaplan on vocals. Watch additional audience-captured videos from Sunday’s finale below:
