[UPDATE 1/16/23]: The NFL playoffs began this weekend, featuring—among others—heated matchups between the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars versus the Los Angeles Chargers. In addition to exciting post-season action on the road to the Super Bowl, fans at those games were also treated to performances by Bootsy Collins and Tedeschi Trucks Band leaders Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, respectively.
Ahead of the rollercoaster that was the Jaguars’ 31-30 come-from-behind victory against the Chargers on Saturday, musical power couple Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi opened the game with a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner”. Tedeschi handled the vocals while her Tedeschi Trucks Band partner accompanied her on slide guitar amidst a military flyover and fireworks display.

Over in America’s Heartland, Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals squared off against an injury-beleaguered Baltimore Ravens deprived of star quarterback Lamar Jackson. As the teams retired to their locker rooms at halftime with the Bengals trailing 9-10, Cincinnati native and star-spangled funk icon Bootsy Collins staged a brief, four-minute performance with The Ohio Players.
The ensemble played an abridged version of the incendiary funk staple “Fire” as well as Collins’ original Bengals fight song “Fear Da Tiger”. Sunday’s brief appearance marked Bootzilla’s first live performance since retiring from touring in 2019. The performance was originally scheduled for January 2nd during the Bengals’ game against the Buffalo Bills, but that match was suspended in the first quarter after the Bills’ Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field.

It’s worth noting that both teams with musical guests won their playoff bouts, with the Bengals ultimately beating the Ravens 24-17. Never underestimate the power of a good pump-up song.
[1/13/23]: While football will take center stage as the NFL playoffs begin this weekend, music fans will have some fun appearances to look out for during the games.
On Saturday, January 14th, Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi will perform the National Anthem before their beloved Jacksonville Jaguars face off against the Los Angeles Chargers on their home turf at Jacksonville, FL’s TIAA Bank Field. Derek and Susan have always been vocal about their devotion to the Jags. Tedeschi previously sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of a 2017 Jaguars playoff game, and Trucks later remotely offered up a solo guitar rendition of the anthem during the 2020 season, but it doesn’t take a performing gig to get them out to TIAA Bank Field—they were just there this past weekend as fans to cheer the team on in its final regular season game.

On Sunday, January 15th, Cincinnati-native funk legend Bootsy Collins will be on hand at Paycor Stadium during the NFL playoff showdown between the Cincinnati Bengals‘ and the Baltimore Ravens. The special Bootsy halftime show, backed by The Ohio Players, will mark Collins’ first official live performance since he retired from touring in 2019.
Bootsy’s halftime show was originally due to take place on January 2nd during the Bengals’ game against the Buffalo Bills. That game was suspended during the first quarter after the Bills’ Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field.
“We was ready to funk it out with the Bengals Who-Dey Baby and something just wasn’t right, everything just went chaotic,” Bootsy Collins explained of his experience that night. “I immediately started watching the monitor in my dressing room and seen that beautiful young man on the ground. Patti my wife immediately looked at me and I said Patti, God is trying to tell us that we all need to be On The One right now and she agreed. Bless that young man.”

In honor of his return to the stage this weekend, Bootsy has released a new track inspired by Bengals legend Ickey Woods and his famous “shuffle.” Appropriately dubbed “The Ickey Shuffle”, the funk anthem is meant to accompany the end zone dance created by Ickey Woods. Bengals fans are invited to check out the track and create their own version of the shuffle. Partial proceeds will go to the Jovante Woods Foundation.
