Caroline Rose has revealed details of a new album, The Art of Forgetting, their first since 2020’s Superstar. News of the album, which is due out on March 24th via New West Records, arrives alongside the single “Miami” paired with an engrossing music video.
A series of dramatic life events prompted a change in outlook for Rose on The Art of Forgetting. On previous albums Superstar, 2018’s LONER, and her 2014 debut I Will Not Be Afraid, Rose displayed a sharp wit that colored infectious indie rock. With their new disc, Rose breaks down the layer of levity they formerly hid behind to lay bare the raw emotion of still-healing wounds. Of course, their humor is still an unavoidable byproduct of the creative chemical reaction.
In the wake of a breakup, Rose began a journey inward that unlocked buried childhood experiences. All the while, they were receiving voicemails from their grandmother “who was clearly losing her mind.” These seemingly disparate experiences are chronicled throughout The Art of Forgetting as Rose pieces together the story of how they came to love themselves once again.
“It got me thinking about all the different ways memory shows up throughout our lives,” says Rose. “It can feel like a curse or be wielded as a tool.”
This focus on memory influenced the recording of The Art of Forgetting, with Rose opting for tools and instruments that would decay over time. The use of wooden and stringed instruments, voices, tape, and granular synthesis gives the 14-track album a feeling of impermanence, that like memories it too can fade away. The basic recording began in Rose’s home studio and “from there it was about a year of experimenting with those recordings both at home and in a couple other studios–chopping them up into loops and smears, creating modular percussion, and ultimately building any additional parts around them.”

The acoustic-centered “Miami” amplifies devastatingly personal lyrics about the end of a relationship, only to rub up against crashing electric guitar and drums. Thoughtful reflection is dashed by cacophonic anger in a push-and-pull of emotions, culminating with Rose shouting out the album’s title, “This is the art of forgetting how.”
“I’m not one to shy away from drama, and so this was a perfect opportunity to really bring out every ounce of desperation and anger and all those confusing emotions that happen after a big heartbreak,” Rose said.
