Near, far, wherever they are, Celine Dion fans are taking up the cause and protesting Rolling Stone over the music publication’s recent omission of the Canadian singer from its “200 Greatest Singers Of All Time” list. What began earlier this week with online grumblings has since ballooned into a full-blown protest outside the outlet’s New York offices.

The small group of mostly-Canadian demonstrators carried signs that ranged from quippy (“Rolling Stone is Stoned”, also a favorite chant) to the befuddlingly tone-deaf (“Justice For Celine”). Driving home the absurdity of the event was the fact that, across the street at the New York Public Library, a group of protestors implored Attorney General Merrick Garland to indict those involved in the January 6th insurrection, which occurred exactly two years prior.

“Yeah, it’s very important, the other protest, we believe in the other protest,” French Canadian broadcaster Julie Snyder, who was also present with her own TV cameras alongside the protestors, told Rolling Stone‘s Ilana Woldenberg. “But we think also we can protest with our heart and our song and that the song can help people to get better … But you work for the music industry, even if it’s a sad day today for you guys.”

The presence of Snyder, who according to Rolling Stone interrupted their on-camera interviews, cast doubt that this was more than staged political theater. The protest appears to have been organized by a group of Celine Dion fans calling themselves The Red Heads, with the group’s founder Line Basbous saying they traveled across the border to express themselves “in the name of Celine.”

In the protestors’ defense, there is plenty to bemoan in Rolling Stone‘s redux of its original 2008 “100 Greatest Singers Of All Time” list, including Bob Dylan placing at #16 ahead of Prince at #15. On a related note, the protest for Rolling Stone‘s snub of Gene Ween has been postponed to “Someday”.
