Greensky Bluegrass delivered a two-night run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Friday and Saturday. The quintet welcomed a guest each night from the opening acts with Neighbor guitarist Lyle Brewer joining in on Friday and guitarist Mihali sitting in on Saturday.
Greensky Bluegrass — mandolinist/frontman Paul Hoffman, guitarist Dave Bruzza, banjoist Michael Bont, bassist Mike Devol and dobroist Anders Beck — kicked off night one with a pair of songs, “Wish I Didn’t Know” and “It’s Not Mine Anymore,” from their 2019 album, All For Money. The band then stretched the first cover of the evening, Bob Marley’s “Small Axe,” out to around 10 minutes. “Get Sad,” from the quintet’s latest album, Stress Dreams, followed before a bust out of Flatt & Scruggs’ “Foggy Mountain Special,” last time played on February 5, 2020 in Knoxville for a gap of 152 shows, as per Phantasy Tour.
Next up came more Stress Dreams material in “Reasons To Stay” and the bluegrass standard “Crying Holy Unto the Lord.” GSBG then welcomed Brewer beginning on the title track to Stress Dreams. Following an effects-laden sequence from Beck, Brewer slow-boiled a solo that soon soared over The Cap, helping to extend the song to around 11 minutes. Lyle stuck around to help Greensky wrap up the set with the Derek & The Dominos rocker “Keep On Growing.”
Greensky Bluegrass opened the second set with All For Money’s “Do It Alone” before stretching “Living Over” to around 10 minutes. Greensky kept up the jams with a 13-minute “Freeborn Man (Keith Allison)” before Bruzza led the band through his “Bottle Dry” composition. “Monument” and “All For Money” followed ahead of an exploration of “Past My Prime” to close the second set. Greensky Bluegrass dusted off Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” for the first time in three years to bring night one at The Cap to a close.
Night two began with the bluegrass standard “Reuben’s Train.” After focusing heavily on their last two albums on Friday, Saturday saw GSBG leaning into their landmark 2014 LP If Sorrows Swim, offering “Burn Them,” “Demons,” “Forget Everything” and an extensive “Leap Year” to close the first set.
Set two got underway with the classic “Old Barns” which flowed into Ralph Stanley’s “Clinch Mountain Backstep.” The band then brought out Mihali beginning on “What You Need.” The Twiddle guitarist/vocalist stayed on for a big bust out of the Grateful Dead-covered, Cannon’s Jug Stompers tune “Big Railroad Blues” — last time played on May 18, 2017 for a total gap of 410 shows — which saw some serious shred from Mihali.
After “Screams,” oldie “The Radio Blues” and “Worry For You,” GSBG kept the bust outs rolling with the most massive of the run via the band’s second performance of the late Justin Townes Earle’s “One More Night In Brooklyn” and the first since May 25, 2012 for a total gap of 1,035 shows. A 17-minute “Don’t Lie” ended the second frame. Greensky Bluegrass concluded their Capitol Theatre run with “The Four.”
