Bruce Springsteen released his debut album, Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J., 50 years ago today. The Boss shared a short video commemorating the milestone and also giving some history on the record.
After impressing John Hammond — who is credited with discovering Bob Dylan — and inking a deal with Columbia Records, Springsteen began work on his first album at 914 Sound Studios in Blauvelt, New York on June 7, 1972. Hammond had garnered Dylan a deal a decade before and Asbury Park certainly has shades of Dylan. Look no further than album opener “Blinded By The Light.” There’s also a lot of Van Morrison, check out “Spirit In The Night.” Soul and Motown are a strong presence throughout the LP as well.
Asbury Park also saw Bruce beginning to assemble his legendary E Street Band. Longtime members, bassist Gary Tallent and saxophonist Clarence “The Big Man” Clemmons, played on the record. While Springsteen would go on to make some of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll albums of all time between 1975’s Born To Run and 1984’s Born In The U.S.A., it was really Bruce’s leave-it-all-on-the-stage marathon live shows that endeared him to his fans.
While Asbury Park songs have always been in Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s live repertoire, The Boss and company never played the album live in its entirety until November 22, 2009. The performance came during the Working On A Dream Tour closer at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York.
