moe. came to The Wellmont Theater in Montclair, New Jersey on Saturday. The Buffalo-bred band — complete with guitarist Chuck Garvey as well as keyboardist Nate Wilson — premiered covers from Crosby, Stills & Nash and Yes.
After suffering a stroke a little over a year ago, co-founding moe. guitarist Chuck Garvey made his triumphant return to the stage at moe.’s New Year’s Eve concert in Philadelphia. Keyboardist Nate Wilson and guitarist Suke Cerulo helped moe. along while Chuck recovered with Wilson staying on with the band.
moe. got the first set in Montclair underway with the classic “Happy Hour Hero,” penned by bassist Rob Derhak. A pairing of “Mar-De-Ma” and an 18-minute “George” followed ahead of “Jazz Cigarette” and “Nebraska.”
Another 18-minute excursion, this time on “Mexico,” followed and flowed into the moe. debut of the David Crosby-penned CSN tune, “Long Time Gone.” David Crosby sadly passed away last week. “Long Time Gone” originally appears on Crosby, Stills & Nash’s 1969 self-titled debut album. moe. wrapped up the first frame with the nod to Croz.
moe. launched the second frame with Pink Floyd’s “Fearless” before segueing into the outro jam of “Starship Trooper” by Yes, a first for the band. moe. then took “Meat” for a ride with a 23-minute rendition of the Al Schnier-penned oldie. Another Schnier classic, “Yodelittle,” followed and also received the jam treatment. The old-school favorites kept rolling with Rob’s “Rebubula,” which encompassed the bassist’s “Buster” to seal the second set. moe. returned to encore with “Seat Of My Pants.”
