Lettuce keyboardist/vocalist Nigel Hall has released a funky new live single, “Don’t Change For Me (Live)”, about accepting someone for who they are, even when that means they’re not the one.

Recorded at The Camel in Richmond, VA, the song has a laid-back old school funk groove with soulful vocals from Hall plus background accompaniment. The track features Butcher Brown guitarist Morgan Burrs, keyboardist DJ Harrison, bassist Andrew Randazzo, drummer Corey Fonville, and Marcus Tenney, a.k.a. Tennishu.

The songs lyrics tell the story of a relationship that started out perfect: “When we first met, thought you were the one for me / And every single day making new memories / Don’t go leave me love all night, when I held ya baby it felt so right / Never ever thought this feeling could go away.” At first the refrain, “Don’t change for me,” seems to mean, “I want things to stay like this forever,” but it takes on new meaning as the relationship changes throughout the song.

In the next verse, the speaker expresses gratitude to their romantic partner while admitting things seem to have run their course:

Yeah Girl I wanna thank you for everything you’ve done for me
You know I never ever met anybody like you, oh no
But we can never bring back the way things used to be
And no matter how hard we try
Ancient history
We used to have long walks and have good conversation
And now our difference in opinion are turning into situation
Now we know it’s not meant to be
We got to move on to set each other free
And now, now we see all the signs
It’s time to leave this thing behind

After admitting that the relationship is over, Hall continues singing, “Don’t change for me,” but instead of meaning, “You’re perfect,” the line expresses acceptance that sometimes people just need to move on.

“Don’t Change For Me” Lyircs:

When we first met, thought you were the one for me
And every single day making new memories
Don’t go leave me love all night, when I held ya baby it felt so right
Never ever thought this feeling could go away
And I wanna sing to you baby
Don’t change for me
‘Cause I don’t need no favors baby
It’s okay with me
‘Cause I’m gonna be
Just fine
Just fine
So don’t make no more excuses
‘Cause I know everything is useless now
Don’t pray for me
Just fine
Just fine
Yeah Girl I wanna thank you for everything you’ve done for me
You know I never ever met anybody like you, oh no
But we can never bring back the way things used to be
And no matter how hard we try
Ancient history
We used to have long walks and have good conversation
And now our difference in opinion are turning into situation
Now we now it’s not meant to be
We got to move on to set each other free
And now, now we see all the signs
It’s time to leave this thing behind
Don’t change for me
‘Cause I don’t need no favors from you or nobody
It’s okay with me
‘Cause I’m gonna be
Just fine
Just fine
Don’t make no more excuses
‘Cause I know everything is useless y’all
Don’t pray for me
Gonna be
Just fine
Just fine
Don’t change for me
Oh I don’t need no favor baby
It’s okay with me
‘Cause I’m gonna be
Just fine
Just fine
Don’t make no more excuses
‘Cause I know that thing is useless now
Don’t pray for me
Gonna be
Just fine
Just fine
