Greensky Bluegrass and Neighbor wrapped up a brief Northeast run of shows together on Friday in Boston, Neighbor’s hometown. The bands would swap guest appearances at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway to conclude the three-show stint.

Neighbor opened up for Greensky on January 13 to kick off the latter’s two-night stand at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. Neighbor also hopped on the GSBG bill in Red Bank, New Jersey on January 18 before welcoming the quintet to Boston.

Neighbor kicked off their set at MGM Music Hall at Fenway with the debut of a song called “Carmelita.” The band then flowed into “Canopy,” which they left unfinished and instead segued into “Magna Zero,” which saw a “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” tease. “The Longest Day” capped the four-song seamless opening segment comprising most of the set.

After, “Cuba Street,” Neighbor brought out dobroist Anders Beck and guitarist Dave Bruzza from Greensky Bluegrass for set closer “Lonely Rider.” Keyboardist Richard James led the way on the tune set to appear on Neighbor’s forthcoming debut studio album before Bruzza added some twang to the funky rocker. Beck and Neighbor guitarist Lyle Brewer then took individual rides before swapping licks in a spirited exchange, after which James brought the song and set home. A special moment came after Neighbor’s set when bassist Dan Kelly proposed to his girlfriend Christa on stage — she said yes!

Greensky got their first set underway with the gospel “I’m Working On A Building.” The quintet then linked Benny Burle Galloway’s “What’s Left Of The Night” with “It’s Not Mine Anymore.” Two more pairings followed: “Just to Lie” into “Murder of Crows” and “What You Need” into “Reverend.” GSBG wrapped the first frame with a typically adventurous “Don’t Lie.”

Greensky launched the second set with the bluegrass standard “Reuben’s Train” followed by “Screams” from their 2022 album Stress Dreams. Oldie “The Radio Blues” came next ahead of “Blood Sucking F(r)iends” and “All Four.”

Neighbor’s Richard James and Lyle Brewer then returned the favor, coming out for a three-song sit-in beginning on “I’d Probably Kill You.” Mandolinist Paul Hoffman and Bruzza manned the vocals on the song before phoff reeled off a solo. James then added sparkling piano to a dreamy jam sequence before Brewer took over with a jazz-tinged run on the song’s main chord progression. James and Brewer stayed on to help GSBG close the set with “Reasons To Stay” and “Kerosene.” Greensky Bluegrass returned to encore with “Sweet Emotion,” from Boston’s own Aerosmith.
