Stewart Copeland Compiling Diaries From The Police’s ‘Starving Years’ Into New Book

Diaries kept by The Police drummer Stewart Copeland documenting the band’s early days form the basis of a new book. The Police Diaries, 1976-’79 is due out later this year via Rocket 88 Books.

Copeland called the tome “the truest account of The Police’s beginning and early days” and said it will consist of “original diary pages, hand-made poster designs, ragged accounts, callow observations and other scribblings of a proto-rock star, illuminated by hitherto unseen vintage photos from the deepest vaults.”

The book starts one year before The Police was formed. Copeland’s journals featured in The Police Diaries cover his initial meetings with bandmates Sting and Stewart Copeland as well as the band’s “starving years.”

Copeland has also mined his archives for previously unreleased music from the same era the book chronicles. Out first is the proto-Police track “Clown’s Revenge.” Hear Stewart Copeland’s “Clown’s Revenge” demo and watch the drummer announce The Police Diaries, 1976-’79 below:
