The Mother Hips rolled out “Room Four,” the third single from When We Disappear, a new studio album due out January 27 through Blue Rose Music. The song is one of nine co-written by co-founders Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono featured on the LP, which also includes a cover of Buffy St. Marie’s “Codine.”
Bluhm and Loiacono headed to New Mexico with bandmates John Hofer and Brian Rashap in November of 2021 for the sessions. The quartet spent time at Ghost Ranch with Blue Rose founder Joe Poletto before decamping to Jono Manson’s Kitchen Sink studio to record the follow-up to 2021’s Glowing Lantern. When We Disappear, The Mother Hips’ 12th studio album, was self-produced and consists of “lit-psych, guitar-driven rock songs inspired by psychology and literature.”
Tim Bluhm explained the origins of “Room Four” in a press release, stating:
“We were in Big Sur at the Fernwood Resort to perform for our 12th annual Hipnic festival. Greg and I were sitting on the edge of the bed in the hotel room in question, playing some guitar. Greg had a riff that was reminiscent of Houses of the Holy-era Led Zeppelin. I had been working with a deceptively difficult Brian Wilson-inspired melody that we managed to fit into the guitar figure with a bit of effort. In the song, the room itself becomes personified and sees the singer in different phases of his life; warm, social gatherings contrasted with quiet, contemplative retreats.”
