Twiddle rang in the new year with a festive ’90s-themed show at The State Theatre in Portland, ME on Saturday night. The sold-out show featured support from New Jersey upstarts Dogs In A Pile, who brought out Twiddle guitarist Mihali Savoulidis and drummer Adrian Tramontano for a cover of Ween’s “Voodoo Lady” during their set.

After keyboardist Ryan Dempsey introduced the theme of the evening with a bit of the Rugrats theme song, Twiddle, who will go on an indefinite hiatus at the end of 2023 after 15 years together, kicked off the first set with a cover of Nirvana’s “In Bloom” featuring guest guitarist Scott Hannay. The band donned costumes inspired by the ’90s, with Mihali rocking a Kurt Cobain outfit including a flannel shirt, big sunglasses, and a plaid cap with Holden Caulfield-style ear flaps.

Next came a rendition of “Doinkinbonk!!!” that featured a detour through Primus‘s “Too Many Puppies” sung by bassist Zdenek Gubb. The set also included debuts of other ’90s favorites including Eagle-Eye Cherry’s “Save Tonight” and Counting Crows’ “Mr. Jones”, which featured Hannay on guitar. Twiddle then welcomed Dogs In A Pile guitarist Jimmy Law to sit in on “White Light”, which included a jam on Blues Traveler’s “But Anyway”, before concluding the first set as a quartet with “Beautiful”, off Twiddle’s recent album, Every Last Leaf.

The second set began with the theme from Family Matters and a cover of Blink-182’s “Dammit” featuring Hannay on guitar. A joyful “Syncopated Healing” jam ushered in 2023 before the band transitioned to the traditional “Auld Lang Syne”, which flowed into Every Last Leaf track “Slippin’ In The Kitchen”. Additional highlights included the band’s debut of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 1992 hit “Under The Bridge”, Spin Doctors’ “Two Princes”, Sublime’s “Santeria”, and Green Day’s “Longview”.

Twiddle closed out the night with an encore featuring “Mushrooms Of The Sea” and “Every Last Leaf II”, both off Every Last Leaf, with allusions to Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain” bridging them together.
