Umphrey’s McGee and Eggy both offered up tributes to the late David Crosby during a Friday night show at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. The performance, which came the day after the folk icon’s death at the age of 81, came as part of Umphrey’s McGee’s three-night 25th birthday celebration.

The members of Eggy—Jake Brownstein (guitar, vocals), Dani Battat (keys, vocals), Mike Goodman (bass, vocals), and Alex Bailey (drums, vocals)—have always been vocal about their affection for Crosby and the rest of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. From meditative home performance clips to full-set tributes to consistently show-stealing covers of classics like “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”, the influence pf Crosby and company has always been part of the Eggy DNA.

On Friday, after kicking off the evening with originals “Wayless” and “Rosetta Stone”, Eggy dedicated the majority of its three-song opening set to a sprawling cover of CSNY’s “Carry On”. Stretching beyond 20 minutes in length, the rendition wove in and out of the song’s composed structure as the quartet showcased the many layers of its sound, from rich vocal harmonies to rhythmic and dynamic fluidity to a slew of new sounds and effects from Brownstein’s corner—not to mention the warm tone of a beautiful new custom guitar from Frank Brothers Guitar Co.

While Umphrey’s McGee’s prog-rock sound is about as far from the fare of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young as it gets, the band previously delivered acoustic covers of “Southern Cross” on two occasions in 2015. On Saturday at The Capitol Theatre, the band went folk on a fresh selection from the Crosby, Stills & Nash songbook to honor the legacy of the late David Crosby.

Following a two-set dance party, Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger (on acoustic guitars) and Joel Cummins (on keys) took the stage as a trio for the first-ever Umphrey’s rendition of Stills-penned CSN favorite “Helplessly Hoping”. The acoustics remained as the rest of the band retook the stage for “The Weight Around” before the UM plugged back in at full force to close the evening with “The Floor”.
